Reaching out for support is a big step, and it is normal to have questions first. Here are the ones families ask us most often. If yours is not here, we are always happy to talk it through.

Getting started

How do I book an appointment?

Every new client starts with our online request form. It takes a few minutes and asks about who the support is for, what is going on, and the days and times that work for you. Our intake team will be in touch within one business day.

Do I need a referral from a doctor or school?

No. Families can reach out to us directly. Some insurance plans ask for a doctor's note before they will reimburse sessions, so it is worth checking your plan.

How long is the wait?

We are accepting new clients now and aim to have every new client in their first session within two weeks of their request. Wait times can vary with the times you need, and after-school times fill fastest.

How do you choose the right therapist?

We match each client with a therapist based on age, what they are coming in for, and availability. If you have a preference for a particular therapist, let us know on the request form and we will do our best to get you connected.

What kinds of concerns do you help with?

We can offer support in areas related to anxiety, ADHD, autism, depression, relationship challenges, grief and loss, emotion regulation and school-based challenges. Through occupational therapy we also help with developmental delays, sensory processing, eating challenges and executive functioning. We see children, teens, parents, adults, couples and families.

Sessions

What happens at the first session?

Before you come in, you will receive intake forms to complete online. At the first session your therapist will go over consent and confidentiality, then spend time getting to know you and what you are hoping for. Together you will shape a plan within the first few sessions.

Will I be involved in my child's therapy?

Yes. Our work is attachment-based, which means we see parents and caregivers as the most important people in a child's life. Depending on your child's age and needs, you may join sessions, have your own parent sessions, or check in with the therapist regularly. We also offer parenting support for families who want help on their own.

What does therapy look like for a young child?

For younger children, sessions are often play-based, because play is how children make sense of their world. It may look like games, art or building, but each activity has a purpose. We believe behaviour is communication, and our job is to help understand what your child's behaviour is telling us.

How many sessions will we need?

It depends on what you are coming in for. Some families come for a handful of sessions; others find it helpful to continue over a longer period. Your therapist will talk with you about progress along the way, and you are always part of deciding what comes next.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes, by phone or secure video when it is a good fit clinically. For virtual sessions, please be in a private space where you will not be interrupted. Virtual sessions are available to clients located in Manitoba.

Occupational therapy

What is paediatric occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy helps children with the everyday skills they need at home, at school and at play. Our paediatric OT works with children and teens on sensory processing, developmental delays, eating challenges, executive functioning and fine motor skills, and works alongside parents and schools.

How do I know if my child needs OT or counselling?

You do not need to know before you reach out. Tell us what you are noticing on the request form and we will help you decide where to start. Some children benefit from both, and having OT and counselling under one roof makes that easier.

Where do OT sessions happen?

Most OT sessions take place in our office. We also offer in-home and school assessments for existing clients, and virtual consults for parents.

Fees and insurance

How much does a session cost?

A 50-minute counselling session is $150, and an occupational therapy session is $160. Payment is due at the time of the session.

Is therapy covered by insurance?

Many extended health plans cover counselling and occupational therapy. Our therapists are Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCC) and Registered Social Workers (RSW), and our OT is a registered occupational therapist. Plans differ in which credentials they cover, so please check with your insurer before your first session. We do not direct bill. You pay at each session and receive a receipt to submit to your insurer.

What if I need to cancel?

Life can be busy and unpredictable, and we understand. Please give us at least 24 hours' notice so we can offer the time to another client. A first late cancellation or missed session is charged at 50% of the session fee, and any after that at the full fee.

Privacy and consent

Is what we share kept confidential?

Yes. Your information is kept in a secure electronic record and handled under Manitoba's Personal Health Information Act. We do not share it outside Monarch without your consent, except where the law requires it, such as when someone's safety is at risk or a child may need protection. Your therapist will explain these limits at the first session.

We are separated or divorced. Who needs to consent?

Before a child's first session, we confirm who has custody and legal decision-making for the child. If there is a parenting order or agreement, please let us know on the request form; we may ask for a copy so we can make sure the right consent is in place. We also offer co-parenting counselling for parents working through separation together.

Will I know what my teen talks about?

Teens do best when they trust their space is private, so their therapist will not share the details of each session. At the start, the therapist will talk with you and your teen together about what will be shared with parents, and they will always tell you if there is a safety concern.

Times and location

Do you have after-school or weekend appointments?

Yes. We have daytime, after-school and evening appointments on weekdays, plus weekend times. Let us know what works best for your family on the request form.

Where are you located?

Our office is at 204-3657 Roblin Blvd, Winnipeg, MB R3R 0E2.
